Where creativity meets community
Solar Lagoon began in 2019 when a small group of hobby enthusiasts realised something was missing in their creative lives. Despite living in a connected world, genuine hands-on learning felt increasingly rare. Online tutorials could not replicate the guidance of an experienced mentor, and solo practice lacked the energy of shared discovery.
We converted a former warehouse space in Manchester into a studio designed for making. Natural light floods the workbenches. Quality materials sit ready for use. And most importantly, the atmosphere encourages both focused concentration and friendly conversation.
What started as weekend pottery sessions has grown into a diverse programme spanning photography, painting, leatherwork, gardening, calligraphy, and more. Yet our founding principle remains unchanged: everyone deserves access to creative learning in an encouraging environment.
We believe mastery comes through patient practice, not pressure. Our workshops prioritise understanding over speed, process over perfection.
Creative learning should be open to everyone regardless of prior experience or background. We design workshops that welcome complete beginners alongside those building existing skills.
From the materials we provide to the instructors we hire, quality matters. Working with good tools and genuine expertise makes learning more enjoyable and results more satisfying.
Hobbies become richer when shared. We cultivate a welcoming atmosphere where members connect through common interests and support each other's creative journeys.
Our instructors come from varied backgrounds, united by genuine passion for their crafts and a talent for teaching. Some arrived through formal art education, others through decades of dedicated practice. What they share is patience, enthusiasm, and a knack for making complex techniques feel achievable.
Each instructor maintains an active personal practice alongside teaching. This keeps their skills sharp and ensures they bring fresh perspectives and current techniques into every session. When you learn with us, you learn from people who continue to grow in their own creative work.
We also invite guest artists throughout the year for special demonstrations and workshops. These collaborations expose our community to diverse approaches and inspire new directions in their own making.
